I Had My Second Hip Surgery
I finally did it. I went through my seventh and hopefully, my final surgery. It was worse than I anticipated. I beat my own record of the worst labral tear my surgeon had ever seen. They had to put so much fluid into my hip it was equivalent to that of a hip replacement. I woke up in intense and severe pain. It wasn’t at all what I anticipated or hoped for. Luckily, it’s day two and things are already improving.Â
Once that fluid is absorbed by the body, the pain starts going down. Although I’m still swollen throughout my entire leg, it’s nowhere near as bad as yesterday. I’m so grateful to have my mom by my side helping out. I can’t even imagine if I had tried to do this on my own. I need help with turning over, going to the bathroom, and just about everything. I think my bed will have a permanent imprint of my butt by the end of this journey.Â
I have a lot of goals for after surgery that I’m holding onto. As most of you know, my ultimate goal is a marathon. Right now, I’m working towards biking. That’s a tangible thing I can achieve in the next few weeks. It won’t be easy but it’s possible and that’s all I need. Having goals makes the healing process so much easier. It’s a reminder that I didn’t put myself through this for nothing.
It’s also validating that my hip surgeon can physically see how torn the labrum was. It’s likely a result of years of constant tearing. It looked like velcro apparently. He took a video in surgery to show all of his colleagues and students. I don’t know if that’s comforting or disturbing but it makes me feel a little famous. It’s nice that I can be known on both the allergy floor and orthopedic floor. My outstanding achievements of pushing the human body to its absolute physical limits speak for themselves.
All jokes aside, the surgery was difficult. This recovery is going to be difficult. I am hopeful about the outcome and feel confident that everyday things can only improve. I am so grateful for everyone checking in on my well being. I’m grateful to have my mom by my side and Crush to help out. I’ll check in about my hip in a couple weeks and let you know where I stand, literally.Â
I hope you’re having an amazing day. I hope your day is filled with joy, positivity, and laughter. I hope you find peace, love, and happiness.

Wow Mel, I am praying that you heal quickly. ( I know what you have said about prayer in the past, but I’m praying for you anyways) I believe pray by name, and intentional requests are answered, and sending a request on your behalf is important. I’m so glad our mom was there with you, it doesn’t matter how old we get, our mom with us is so important as a support, even for the mental support! Thank you for the updates, I look forward to seeing great things after this recovery to free you up in some ways to continue to follow your dreams! <3
