Five Post Surgery Distractions
If you’re like me, all you want after surgery is distraction. It’s easy to wallow in the pain and get lost in napping. Although I appreciate letting my body rest, it’s helpful to have distractions when I’m all rested. So here are some ways that I like to distract myself post surgery!
- Writing
I really enjoy writing. Whether it be journalling, writing blog articles, or working on a project, writing is a good outlet. It can be difficult to get started, especially if the pain is intense. Once I find my rhythm though it’s easy to get into a flow state of mind. Not only is that helpful to alleviate some pain but it’s also great for my mental health to be creative. It’s truly a win win situation.
- Coloring
I totally understand if you’re not into writing. It also may not be a reasonable expectation depending on what kind of surgery you had. That being said, coloring is a great alternative. Now, I understand that if you can’t write, you probably can’t color. However, if you can I’d highly suggest it. It’s a great creative outlet that doesn’t take the same brain power as writing.
- Playing Video Games
I’m prone to playing Animal Crossing. I got a Nintendo Switch before my interstim surgery and it was a great way to pass the time while I was recovering. I also like playing Roller Coaster Tycoon on my phone. If I could sit at my computer, I might even play the Sims 4 but that’s not in the cards at this moment. So I’m sticking with my switch and Roller Coaster Tycoon.
- Tik Tok
I caved a while back and downloaded Tik Tok. I can’t say that I’m proud of it. Honestly, it is a great distraction though. I almost find content that makes me laugh and it brightens my day. Laughter truly is an amazing medicine and it can really aid in the healing process.
- Watching Nostalgic Movies
Whenever I have a surgery coming up, I start a list of movies I want to watch. I don’t watch a lot of movies in my free time. When I have the inclination to watch a movie, I write it down knowing that I can watch it during recovery. This builds some excitement for the recovery process. I also almost always want to watch movies from childhood. The nostalgic feelings are positive and bring me joy.
These are just some quick tips to help you prepare for recovery. Whether you’re going through a procedure or major surgery, it’s always good to have a recovery plan. Let me know what you like to do for your recovery and how it’s going for you.
I hope you’re having an amazing day. I hope that your day is filled with joy, positivity, and laughter. I hope you find, peace, love, and happiness.
