How to Spread Positivity

I think in these last few weeks, we could all use a bit more positivity. For most of us, we’ve been stuck indoors for weeks and it’s scheduled to last about a month longer. So how do we spread positivity? Back in times before quarantine, I would have brought a friend or family member a small gift. I might have even dropped by just to say hello. Now, things are different but there’s still positivity and love all around us. Here are five ways to spread positivity that don’t involve going anywhere.

  • Send a Message

Too often we think of someone, ask ourselves what they’re up to and miss the opportunity to reach out. This is the perfect time to send a message. It doesn’t have to be lengthy, it can be a simple “I’m thinking of you, I hope you’re doing well.” There’s no reply needed. You reached out and someone feels good because they know you are there if they need you.

  • Share a photo

This doesn’t have to come with any context. Share your experience and positivity. Let people know what you’re up to. Involve others in your life. They may take the opportunity to have a check in, depending on their own circumstance. Snap a picture and hit send.

  • Sing a Song

I know we’re not all musicians but listening to happy music makes us happy. Share that with someone. You don’t need to profess your love through a poorly sung ballad but who doesn’t enjoy goofing around. If you don’t live with someone or don’t feel comfortable doing it in front of the person you live with, facetime a friend. Go in your car, your shower, or your basement and belt your heart out.

  • Create Something

Whether you’re painting or expelling creative energy through candle making, share it. I painted pictures of Crush and I, flowers, and stuff that didn’t turn out to be anything. (I am not a skilled painter) The flowers turned out pretty well, they are bright and cheery. I can’t help but smile when I see them. No, they are not profound art that will be cherished for years to come but it’s quarantine and anything goes.

  • Smile

Looking for positivity makes us more positive. There will always be good in the world and there will always be bad in the world. It’s all about what we focus on. This is a terrifying time. It’s something most of us ever experienced before but the beauty is, we’re experiencing it together. We can choose to focus on how much good is coming from this. We can all learn a lesson and be better because of this horrible tragedy.

I’m not trying to take away from reality. Life is hard right now. Like I said, if you choose to focus on the negative, you’ll find it. You’ll get what you want out of life, if you choose to look for it. Together, we are becoming a stronger community. We are all bonded by this common experience. Despite political views, race, religion, and all the other arbitrary things that seperate us as humans, this can bring us together. These aren’t revolutionary ideas but I hope they inspire you to be more positive. More importantly, I hope they inspire you to spread positivity.
